2013: Establishment of MERKUR SPIELBANKEN Sachsen-Anhalt GmbH & Co. KG
2014: The company receives a licence to operate casinos in the state of Saxony-Anhalt and in the same year opens its first venue in Leuna-Günthersdorf.
2016: Opening of the MERKUR SPIELBANK in Magdeburg
2018: Opening of the MERKUR SPIELBANK in Halle (Saale)
2021: Acquisition of the former Westdeutsche Spielbanken GmbH by the Gauselmann Group (now MERKUR GROUP)
2022: Westdeutsche Spielbanken GmbH is renamed MERKUR SPIELBANKEN NRW GmbH
The MERKUR GROUP has also been active in the area of casinos since 2013. The starting shot to this was the establishment of MERKUR SPIELBANKEN Sachsen-Anhalt GmbH & Co. KG, a joint venture with Stadtcasino Baden AG. Just one year later, the company came out on top in a selection process and was granted the corresponding licence.
When it was opened at the end of 2014, the first MERKUR SPIELBANK in Leuna was Germany’s most modern casino. Two other venues followed – in Magdeburg in 2016 and in Halle (Saale) in 2018. Motivated by ongoing success, the MERKUR GROUP tapped into additional future markets in the casino sector. Since 2016, the company has held a 40 percent stake in Spielbank Berlin and its four locations and since 2019 has also held a stake in the Mainz, Trier and Bad Ems casinos in Rhineland Palatinate. A very special milestone was achieved in 2021 when the Gauselmann Group, now MERKUR GROUP, won the bid in the tendering procedure to take over the casino operations of the former WESTSPIEL Group in North Rhine-Westphalia, thus enabling it to add the locations in Aachen, Bad Oeyenhausen, Dortmund-Hohensyburg, Duisburg, Monheim and in future Siegburg to its casino repertoire. Overall, the MERKUR GROUP currently operates 14 casinos in Germany.
