Health, culture and social affairs

Social commitment

As one of the largest employers in the region and a globally active company, the MERKUR GROUP sees itself as part of society and does everything possible to reinforce its strength. The MERKUR GROUP expresses its affinity with the local region again and again by making numerous donations – to the ‘Lübbecker Land Tafel’ foodbank and the Lübbecke animal shelter, for example. The company is also delighted to support local schools and kindergartens, as well as sports clubs.

Cultural commitment

In addition to supporting many cultural events, the MERKUR GROUP’s entrepreneurial commitment also benefits the preservation of local monuments and the economic infrastructure. An important contribution to the preservation of the region’s cultural heritage was made by the entrepreneurial family in 2010 with the acquisition of the 500-year old Benkhausen Castle. It is one of the few remaining historical buildings representing Westphalian cultural history. In less than five years, the castle was transformed into a state-of-the-art conference hotel. In addition to seminars, workshops, business meetings and conferences for Group and external companies, Benkhausen Castle is also a venue for a wide variety of artistic and cultural events as well as civil marriage ceremonies. Since May 2015, the castle-café ‘Die Rentei’ and the German Coin-Op Museum have also proved to be popular weekend destinations for people from the surrounding district. Benkhausen Castle also has its own jetty where pleasure cruisers from Minden often dock.

Commitment to health

Besides supporting associations and social projects, the MERKUR GROUP also focuses on health promotion. In collaboration with the regional savings banks, it therefore initiates the annual “Schlaganfall-Info-Tour” (stroke information tour) through the Altkreis Lübbecke district. This tour means that there are ten treatment days on which you can have yourself examined (free of charge) by a doctor for your own personal risk factors. This offer is one that is very dear to Paul Gauselmann’s heart, who is the initiator of the tour and a long-standing board member of the “Schlaganfall” – Neurologische Klinik Minden e. V. charitable stroke trust. Since the start of the tour in 2002, almost 6,000 participants have so far had check-ups.
